Instead of asking what essential oil is good for inflammation as always in aromatherapy the more accurate question to ask is which essential oils are good for inflammation?
Inflammation is a sign that we are dealing with some sort of injury or infection. When on a chronic level, it may be linked with some serious health issues, such as heart disease, cancer, obesity or depression. To avoid these conditions, we have good news (!) essential oils are taken seriously as a helping strategy.
Essential oils may relieve the discomfort of inflammation that occurs either on our skin or internally in joints, respiratory system, or our gastrointestinal system.
Based on aromatherapy studies a whole list of essential oils can make an impact in relieving aches and pains caused by inflammation. They all offer a specific options and we are going to look at these options further in this monthly newsletter.
When skin inflammation is the issue; essential oils such as rose, bergamot, eucalyptus, helichrysum, and patchouli are of great help.
While with respiratory and sinus infections it is helpful to use thyme, eucalyptus, bergamot and chamomile essential oils.
For muscle aches and pains we recommend clove, eucalyptus, bergamot, fennel and ginger essential oils.
Let’s have a look at all the mentioned oils separately.
Bergamot is known for its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties along with its ability to calm frustrated emotions and to install peacefulness. Here are the ways to apply the oil:
- For respiratory issues add a few drops of bergamot to the steaming water and breathe.
- To sooth muscles add a few drops to a base oil (grape seed) and massage the affected area.
- To relief skin inflammation, add a couple of drops of bergamot to a spoon of base oil (sweet almond) and blend it with the warm water in the bath or just rub it into the affected area.
- To aid a sore throat add a few drops of bergamot to a salt water and gargle.
Clove oil has highly anti-inflammatory and pain relieving properties due to its component eugenol. Eugenol is an irritant that increases the blood flow to an area, creating warmth.
Blend a few drops of clove in a base oil and rub it to the affected areas to relieve muscle aches and pains.
If you have a toothache mix a few drops of clove oil with a base oil, dab the ointment on a cotton swab, and rub it on your gum at the base of the pain. You can also make a mouthwash, swish it and spit out.
If you have an upper respiratory infection; a cough or a sore throat, use a few drops of this oil in a steam bath.
In case of a skin infection or muscle aches or pains, add a few drops of eucalyptus oil in to a base oil and rub it into the affected area.
In case of sinus issues fennel is the best to mix into a steam bath to clear up the infection.
Fennel oil improves the circulation and inspires movement, it is soothing and astringent therefore it may help with bloating, menstrual cramping and fluid retention. Add it to a base oil and massage into the affected areas.
Chamomile is one of the best of oils against inflammation. It soothes the skin, calms and repairs, it relieves irritation physically and emotionally.
For an upper-respiratory infection add a few drops of chamomile to a steam bath.
For a muscle strain hold a warm compress with 2-3 drops to the affected area.
Ginger essential oil is warming and anti-spasmodic, therefore, it is useful for the muscular pain. Add a few drops of ginger oil to a compress and hold it against the affected area.
It is also anti-bacterial and anti-microbial, so it can neutralise inflammation coming from germs. Mix ginger with German chamomile and helichrysum (just a few drops) in a base oil against joint pain and inflammation and rub it into the affected areas.
Helichrysum is helpful for skin-related infections (irritations and swelling). It has anti-inflammatory and tissue-repairing powers.
For minor cuts rub a drop of helichrysum neat on the wound to help facilitate healing.
Patchouli has been used for centuries to help with skin healing and to reduce skin inflammation.
In case of bug bites simply mix a few drops of patchouli essential oil into a spoon of a base oil and rub into an affected area.
Rose is amazing for soothing and healing skin inflammation. Its components can inhibit the growth and spread of bacteria and microbes and support the skin’s healing. One of the main components, phenylethanol, shows anti-inflammatory properties. To relieve inflammation add a drop or two to base oil and rub it into the skin.
Thyme essential oil is a natural anti-inflammatory due to its component carvacrol.
For respiratory problems blend it with eucalyptus (a couple drops of each), mix it into a base oil (a spoon), such as sweet almond oil and rub it into your chest.
If you have a mouth infection, add a couple of drops of thyme into water and swish it around your mouth before spitting it out.
