Learn about the best essential oils for skin tightening

Essential oils show many skin improving properties such as healing, but the most useful essential oils for skin tightening are the essential oils with astringent and toning properties.

Essential oils with astringent properties contract, tighten and bind tissue.

Astringent essential oils have a firming and healing action on tissues. They generally make the tissue more dense. Although primarily drying, astringent essential oils also prevent moisture loss.

Astringent essential oils which restrain infection and promote the healing of tissues are called vulnerary. A vulnerary essential oil is a remedy that promotes healing. Essential oils such as bergamot, cajeput, both chamomiles (German and Roman), frankincense, helichrysum, geranium, lavender, myrrh, rosemary, tea tree, and thyme can help.

Essential oils which promote healing are helichrysum, frankincense, myrrh and rose, including rose hydrosol. The action of astringent essential oils lies mainly in their ability to contract cell walls, condensing the tissue and making it firmer.

Astringent essential oils such as cypress and lemon can promote healing and therefore tightening.

Essential oils with toning property strengthen and improve the skin performance. Rose oil is especially beneficial for ageing skin, as it has a tonic and astringent effect on the capillaries and on the circulation generally. Rose hydrosol is soothing and tonic to the skin and it is a pleasing light perfume too.

Some essential oils strengthen and restore vitality and are good in massage blends. They are basil, geranium, lavender, marjoram, myrrh, rosemary, and thyme.

To promote tightening of the tissues the most beneficial method is massage with the above mentioned essential oils. They should be mixed with skin soothing carrier or base oils and applied with gentle massage.
