Eczema and How Aromatherapy Oils Can Help
Essential oils and eczema
Eczema is not just dry skin condition; it is inflamed skin condition. Eczema involves high levels of stress, allergic reaction, and high levels of toxins in the body. Think about it.
Stress is involved in all cases of eczema and there are many essential oils that can help to reduce the level of stress, especially Chamomile, Lavender, Neroli and Petitgrain. I would only add Rose oil to the list. The oils can be used in massages and in baths every day at home. Please, remember, that essential oils need to be diluted in a carrier oil.
Eczema is allergic in origin, and because of that, it is important to do everything to determine what allergens seem to aggravate the skin and avoid them. These may be skin irritants such as soaps, cosmetics, detergents, dust, plants, or some foods.
Sometimes eczema may occur because of accumulation of toxins in the body which it tries to get rid off through the skin. There are detoxifying essential oils that can be used in massages or baths, and perhaps some fasting or cleansing diet could be undertaken.
As a reaction to treatment eczema may temporarily worsen, and one needs all kinds of support to get through this healing process. One of the essential oils Juniper berry works as detoxifying agent on both planes, physical and emotional.
Chamomile, Geranium and Lavender are the essential oils that have good results in treating eczema, but in each case a little trial may be necessary.
Eczema is an inflammatory condition of the skin. Essential oils and aromatherapy have proven to be beneficial for its management. Application of German chamomile, Lavender and Sandalwood may reduce the sensation of itching. They will also reduce the degree of physical trauma caused by scratching.
Essential oils with anti-inflammatory and vulnerary (healing wounds) properties such as German chamomile, Helichrysum will enhance the healing of the skin lesions.
It is important to treat the type of eczema appropriately. Eczema can be wet and dry. Wet eczema could be treated with wet dressings that have been bathed in solutions containing essential oils until the weeping stage and acute inflammation have passed. One of the most effective essential oils to use is Myrrh.
Juniper berry as an astringent essential oil used topically will reduce oozing of fluids. In case of infection, it will be necessary to use essential oils with antimicrobial properties such as Lavender and Tea tree.
Detoxifying essential oils such as Carrot seed, Rosemary, Helichrysum and Rock Rose can be helpful in eliminating toxins.
Relaxant essential oils which may help with stressors and reduce the level of stress will be valuable. They are Bergamot, Roman chamomile, Cedarwood Atlas, Lavender, Geranium, Sandalwood and Ylang ylang.
With chronic dry lesions the essential oils are best applied topically using ointments and carrier oils. The beneficial oils are German Chamomile, Indian Sandalwood, Lavender, Palmarosa, and Patchouli.
