Essential oils to stop snoring

Almost half of the adults snore occasionally. And a quarter snore habitually. Snoring can be more than an inconvenience. It can lead to insomnia or compromise the relationships. Snoring can have causes not connected to the disease. Examples include nasal congestion, anatomic variation of the nose and soft palate, alcohol consumption and smoking. But it can be an indicator of a serious condition.



Sleep apnoea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. It is more common in men, older and obese people.

Treatment includes lifestyle changes and possible use of a device to keep the airways open.

 

There is very little information on using essential oils to stop snoring. It is also not clear why and how essential oils can work. But there are some trials to use essential oils that are effective for some people. Aromatherapy field may offer some relief for treating snoring and improving sleep by using essential oils before going to bed.

 

Rubbing a blend with thyme essential oil on the feet at night can reduce snoring.

When you have cold, inhaling peppermint essential oil will clear the sinuses and make it easier to breath.

Eucalyptus essential oil can break up mucus in sinuses and the back of the throat.

Cedarwood can reduce anxiety and relax muscles.

Lemon essential oil can promote well-being and improve how we feel.

Clove essential oil is used to loosen phlegm in the chest. It may break up phlegm that moves to the back of the throat.

Pine essential oil is used in massage therapy as an effective insomnia treatment.

Fennel essential oil can reduce inflammation in the nose and throat and improve the flow of air through the nose.

Citronella essential oil has detoxifying properties in case of drinking alcohol.

Lavender essential oil promotes relaxation and may trigger the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone.

Marjoram essential oil shows expectorant properties that may break up mucus which obstructs breathing during the night.

 

Application of the essential oils to stop snoring

  • Diffuse
  • Add to a warm bath with some carrier oil
  • Add a few drops of oil to a cup of water and gargle for at least 30 seconds
  • Add a few drops of essential oil(s) to a carrier oil and massage into your feet

 

Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before topical use.

Some essential oils are toxic. Never swallow them.
