Natural remedy for eczema a non-infectious inflammatory condition of the skin.
Atopic (hereditory) dermatitis or eczema is marked by papules, especially of the knees and elbows, with itching sensation.
Primary irritants include emotional stress, environmental temperature or humidity changes, bacterial skin infections.
Also wool garments can cause exacerbation.
Various essential oils may bring a relief due to their healing and antibacterial properties. They should not be used neat but instead blended into carrier oil.
Eczema is often seen as an attempt of the body to eliminate accumulated toxins through the skin.
To eliminate toxins such oils as carrot seed, rosemary, and helichrysum may help.
Eczema is often triggered by stress. The essential oils which are relaxants, such as bergamot, chamomile, cedar wood atlas, lavender, geranium, sandalwood and ylang ylang may assist to reduce the level of stress.
Eczema can be dry and itchy or weeping.
Moist compresses are needed for weeping stage and acute inflammation stage. For relief a compress is recommended to apply for 30 minutes 3-4 times a day. It should be loose and allow plenty of evaporation. The most effective oils to use are German chamomile, myrrh, lavender and juniper berry. A spray of witch hazel may reduce local inflammation.
Essential oil with astringent activity such as juniper berry will reduce any weeping or oozing of fluids.
Application of German chamomile, true lavender and sandalwood will reduce itching, also relieve the degree of physical trauma caused by scratching.
German chamomile will enhance the healing of skin lesions.
If an infection is present it will be necessary to include oils with antimicrobial properties, such as lavender and tea tree.
With chronic dry lesions the essential oils are best applied topically using base oils and emollient butters (AromaSense Cold Cream or Kanuka Ointment). Essential oils such as German chamomile, sandalwood, lavender, palmarosa, and patchouli are beneficial.
To heal the wounds and relieve scars the essential oils such as lavender, frankincense, German chamomile, helichrysum, myrrh, neroli, palmarosa, rose, sandalwood are included in the preparations.

- juniper berry
- tea tree
To apply the essential oils to the dry skin patches we need carrier (base) oil such as apricot, avocado, castor, evening primrose, macadamia, grape seed, sweet almond and wheat germ.
At home you can have a tea spoon of the carrier and add a drop of essential oil from the list above.
