Essential oils to help with itching





Itchy skin is a common skin condition when it is dry and flaky. The skin is dry when it shows insufficient activity of sebaceous glands. Dry skin can also be dehydrated. It lacks the ability to retain moisture as oil in the skin acts as a barrier against moisture loss.

Dry skin tends to be thin and overly delicate. Its condition is badly influenced by the sun, wind, and heat. Insufficient skin care especially during the day further worsens the problem.

Essential oils for dry skin are German and Roman chamomiles, jasmine and rose absolutes, geranium, lavender, palmarosa, rosewood, and sandalwood. The best base oils will be avocado, wheatgerm, sweet almond, apricot kernel, jojoba, evening primrose.

A lot of things can cause itching like the examples below:

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Insect bites
  • Rosacea
  • Psoriasis
  • Drugs
  • Stress
  • Seborrheic dermatitis

Essential oils to help with itching are carrot seed, German and Roman chamomiles, lavender, palmarosa, patchouli, rosewood, and sandalwood.

The essential oils for itching will work together with base oils such as avocado, argan, apricot, calendula, evening primrose, rosehip and hemp.

A regular massage with a combination of essential oil in a carrier oil will increase circulation in the capillaries that nourish the skin, and this in turn will improve the whole skin health. Goes without saying you have to mix essential oils for itching with the carrier oils and do some experiments to see which oil combination works best for you.




Essential oils for cracked skin

In the condition when the skin is so thin that it cracks the essential oils to treat the skin will be myrrh, chamomile, palmarosa, patchouli, and lavender mixed with the vegetable unrefined and cold pressed jojoba, calendula, rosehip, sweet almond.

Essential Oils for Itching

Here are some of the properties of the essential and base oils for dry and itchy skin

Avocado, Persea Armenica, oil is rich in vitamin A and D, lecithin, and potassium. It soothes and moisturises the skin and is ideal for dry skin and eczema. Avocado helps the skin to retain its natural moisture.

Jojoba, Simmondsia Chinensis, oil shows natural moisturising and healing properties. It is an excellent emollient, making the skin soft and smooth.

Rosehip, Rosa Mosqueta, oil is rich on Vitamin A, C, E and Lycopene, that helps improve skin tone. Rose hip oil’s essential fatty acids, omega 3, 6 and 9 make it highly effective for skin concerns including dehydrated skin and dry skin which lacks essential fatty acids. Besides, rose hip oil is extremely healing. Its tiny molecules are capable to penetrate deep into the dermis.

Chamomile, Chamomilla Recutita, essential oil is well-known for its anti-inflammatory activity: its component, a-bisabolol, promotes tissue regeneration.

Lavender essential oil is very gentle toner especially for sensitive skin.

Remember that essential oils are very potent and the best way to apply the essential oils is when blended with the base carrier oils, both of pure therapeutic quality and unrefined.
